Vaccine-preventable encephalitis
Encephalitis can be a complication of vaccine-preventable diseases in children and adults worldwide such as Japanese encephalitis (JE), tick-borne encephalitis (TBE), influenza (flu) virus encephalitis, varicella-zoster (chicken pox) virus (VZV) encephalitis, rabies, Dengue and encephalitis caused by measles, mumps, rubella (MMR).
Encephalitis is a growing global threat because of increased population density and proximity to animals often in under resourced communities, intensive farming practices, vaccine hesitancy, and climate change.
Equity of vaccine access and improvements in global vaccine uptake will help reduce the disease burden of this often-devastating condition.
On World Immunization Week 2024 (24th – 30th April), Encephalitis International ran a vaccine campaign to raise both the public and healthcare professional’s understanding of some of key vaccine-preventable encephalitides and the vaccines protecting against them.
More information on what we achieved through this campaign in the Vaccination Campaign Report.
The resources developed during this campaign – an animation, information factsheets and case study videos are all shared below.
Financial support to develop information and awareness resources has been provided to Encephalitis International as a grant from Pfizer Ltd for this campaign. CSL Seqirus has provided a hands-off grant for the development in this material, and has had no input into the content. Funding has also been provided by GSK and Bavarian Nordic for materials relating to the vaccine-preventable campaign.
