Suhayl Kassam

International Development Manager

What do you do at the charity?

As the International Development Manager, I’m responsible for growing the charity internationally so we can help more people. This obviously ties into the name change from Encephalitis Society to Encephalitis International! The project I’m most excited about right now is developing an online training course about encephalitis for doctors.

Why do you like working here?

It really feels like we make a difference to patients’ and families’ lives which makes all the work worth it. The staff are also passionate, hard-working and so lovely, and it’s wonderful to all be pulling in the same direction. Also, every day is different! I work with patients, NGOs, doctors and governments so I always have to be on my toes.

Tell us something about yourself

I am a twin! We’re not identical though so few people realise that unless we tell them, and even then, many don’t believe us!

What difference does Encephalitis International make in your opinion?

I have personal experience with how impactful charities are that support patients and families during some very difficult times. I can’t begin to express how helpful I found them, and I’ve heard many of our service users say the same thing. Not feeling alone when your world has flipped upside-down is so important. We’re also trying to make a difference in other ways, such as awareness and research.
