Lived Experience of Encephalitis — Eduarda’s Story

At the ‘My Brain: My Story: My Family‘ event in October 2024, Eduarda shared her experience of encephalitis:

In November of 2022, Eduarda, 23, started feeling sick; she had a high fever and her body was very sore. She decided to go to the hospital, suspecting she had COVID-19. Upon first evaluation, the doctor told her it was probably flu and to return if she didn’t get better within three days. Below, she talks about her encephalitis diagnosis and how it has impacted her:

“After the three days I only got worse, so my mum took me to the hospital again. She later told me that on the way to the hospital I started saying things that didn’t make sense. I asked her several times where we were going and why. Within one hour of arriving at hospital, I had two seizures and was sent to the ICU. I don’t have any memory of this, as a matter of fact, I don’t have any memory of most of 2022. On my second day in the ICU, I was told I had encephalitis. Since my diagnosis, my life has changed completely. Today, I want to spread awareness about this illness and to help others see through the pain that this disease can cause.” Eduarda
