Intersectoral Global Action Plan (IGAP) is unveiled by the WHO
The World Health Organization has published a new toolkit to address neurological disorders called the Intersectoral Global Action Plan (IGAP).
Introduction
The world of neurology just got a boost.
The Intersectoral Global Action Plan on Epilepsy and Other Neurological Disorders (IGAP) 2022-2031 is a resource that was created to address the significant global burden of neurological disorders.
This Monday, on the 8th of July, the World Health Organization (WHO) published a new toolkit to aid countries in meeting IGAP’s targets.
What is the toolkit?
The Intersectoral Global Action Plan (IGAP) toolkit outlines specific actions, tools, and resources to achieve IGAP’s vision. It emphasises a multi-sectoral approach, involving health, social services, education, and other relevant sectors.
Importantly, it places people with neurological disorders, their caregivers, families, and representative associations at the centre of their efforts.
The toolkit focuses on 5 strategic areas:
- Prioritisation and governance.
- Diagnosis, treatment, and care.
- Promotion of brain health and prevention of neurological disorders.
- Research and information systems.
- Approach to 6 specific high-burden neurological disorders.
By listing specific steps and providing 90 tools and resources, the toolkit empowers countries to tailor IGAP to their unique contexts, ensuring global goals meet local realities.
A global problem
The global burden of neurological disorders is staggering, with 43% of the world population experiencing some form of nervous system health loss. Alarmingly, neurological conditions have emerged as the second leading cause of mortality worldwide.
Neurological care is falling short, especially where it’s needed most: low- and middle-income countries. Millions worldwide struggle to access treatment and rehab for these conditions. Worse still, many sadly face discrimination and human rights violations.
Working with Encephalitis International
The WHO’s new Intersectoral Global Action Plan (IGAP) toolkit is a beacon of hope. It lights the way towards a world where we not only understand neurological conditions better but can prevent and treat them more effectively.
Encephalitis International, which is working with the WHO and was invited to the toolkit launch, hopes the IGAP will raise global awareness of encephalitis and save lives.
