Global Training Modules on Encephalitis

A global FREE training opportunity for doctors, with special encouragement for clinicians in low-resource settings.

This collection includes two modules:

  1. Encephalitis: diagnosis in adults and children
  2. Encephalitis: management in adults and children

Learning objectives

  • Understand the infectious and autoimmune causes of encephalitis in adults and children
  •  Be able to identify common and atypical clinical presentations of encephalitis across different age groups
  •  Be able to select appropriate investigations to support diagnosis in both adults and children
  •  Understand early empirical and targeted treatment strategies for encephalitis in adults and children
  •  Be able to interpret investigation results to guide ongoing management and confirm aetiology
  •  Appreciate the potential cognitive, psychiatric, psycho-social, and physical sequelae of encephalitis
  •  Understand the role of rehabilitation, support services, and patient organisations, including how to signpost patients to further resources

Module 1. Encephalitis: diagnosis in adults and children

This course offers practical advice on recognising and diagnosing encephalitis in adults and children, with an emphasis on clinicians working in low-resource settings.

After completing this course you should:

  •   Understand the infectious and autoimmune causes of encephalitis in adults and children
  •   Be able to identify common and atypical clinical presentations of encephalitis across different age groups
  •   Be able to select appropriate investigations to support diagnosis in both adults and children

Module 2. Encephalitis: management in adults and children

This course provides evidenced-based guidance on early treatment strategies and ongoing management in adults and children with encephalitis, with an emphasis on clinicians working in low-resource settings.

After completing this course you should:

  •   Understand early empirical and targeted treatment strategies for encephalitis in adults and children
  •   Be able to interpret investigation results to guide ongoing management and confirm aetiology
  •   Appreciate the potential cognitive, psychiatric, psycho-social, and physical sequelae of encephalitis
  •   Understand the role of rehabilitation, support services, and patient organisations, including how to signpost patients to further resources
  •   Understand population and public health strategies for encephalitis prevention
