The Encephalitis Society supports the position of the Association of Medical Research Charities on the issue of using animals in research.

The Society will only consider funding applications for research that tests on animals on a case-by-case basis, where there is evidence of no other model or known alternative, and only for studies being conducted in the UK.

The Society uses expert peer-review to ensure that we fund only high-quality research where the benefits to people and animal health outweigh any harms to animals.

The Encephalitis Society funds research which complies with UK regulation and support the principle of the AMRC of 3Rs to replace, reduce and refine the use of animals in research.

The Society wishes to actively support research which is working toward eradicating the need for animal testing and will always choose to fund studies that do not test on animals over and above equivalent studies that do.
