Following his medical degree at the University of Utrecht, Dr Titulaer completed his neurology residency at the Leiden University Medical Centre. He combined this with his PhD in the prediction for lung carcinoma in the Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (obtained cum laude) at Leiden University. During his PhD he attended the Neuroimmunology Laboratory at NDCN in Oxford supervised by Dr Bethan Lang as an EAN clinical research fellow. Focusing on the emerging field of autoimmune encephalitis, he joined Professor Josep Dalmau’s lab at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, USA (and later at IDIBAPS in Barcelona) as a clinical research fellow, working on anti-NMDAR encephalitis and anti-LGI1 encephalitis.

In 2013, Dr Titulaer relocated to Rotterdam, the Netherlands to join the paraneoplastic neurology group of Professor Sillevis Smitt, setting up his own laboratory and research group in autoimmune encephalitis. He runs a national reference clinic, accredited as European Reference Network (ERN-RITA), for diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune encephalitis.

He currently is an Associate Professor of Neurology and co-director of the Academic Center for Neuro-inflammatory disorders at the Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, the Netherlands, focusing on translational research. He combines epidemiological studies of large cohorts with detailed analysis of individual patients. His aim is to provide individual treatment options, based on patients’ signatures extracted from precise phenotypes, including validated biomarkers, and relevant knowledge of pathophysiological mechanisms.
