The Encephalitis Society is committed to protecting the privacy of those who visit our website. The following information explains what information we compile, what information we keep and how we use that information.

What information do we compile?

We do not collect and store information on our website unless you use any of the email facilities or forms within our sites. If you use these facilities and forms we will record your email address, your name and, where relevant, your postal address to enable us to provide information or services requested. If you join The Encephalitis Society, we keep your name and your contact details on record in order to service your Membership.

If you use our Support Service we collect information about your condition (Encephalitis), the after-effects, your age and a history of your contacts with us. If you would prefer not to have your information stored, please let us know. This will not prevent you from using our services.

Your name and contact details will be used to enable us to provide you with information and services requested. We may also use your information to contact you or to provide you with information we think would be of particular interest. The Encephalitis Society utilises social media (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn) to quickly and efficiently send updates and information to our Members and anyone with an interest in Encephalitis and our work. This is a quick method of engaging with a large number of people. We do not provide support and information directly through social media, but we signpost people to our support and information services.

The Encephalitis Society reserves the right to monitor all messages on its Facebook page and all replies to its tweets. The Encephalitis Society reserves the right to block individuals from following The Encephalitis Society on Twitter or Facebook without prior notice if their posts/tweets contain the following:

  • Commercial endorsements of products, services, organisations, or other entities
  • Content that infringes on copyrights
  • Discriminatory, racist, abusive, obscene, inflammatory, unlawful, or otherwise objectionable statements, language, or content
  • Solicitations of funds with exception of solicitation of contributions for any fundraising activities
  • Confidential information about other people without their agreement
  • Medical advice

The CEO has the overall responsibility for the Society’s Facebook page and Twitter accounts.  The Communication Coordinator checks daily the content of the Facebook and Twitter account.
