Fundraising Top Tips

Our tips will help you to maximize your fundraising potential

Whether you're taking part in a run or a cycle challenge, hiking up a mountain, holding an event, hosting a bake sale or you’re just not sure what you want to do yet, we're here to support you and help you maximise your fundraising for The Encephalitis Society

Our amazing fundraisers inspire us every day by going above and beyond in their determination to raise funds to help those affected by encephalitis get the support they need. We know each and every person puts their all into their challenge and wants to raise as much as possible. We rely 100% on voluntary donations and fundraising and 72p of every £1 is invested directly into our charitable work, funding research, raising awareness and providing support. Every pound you raise will make a difference and the more we raise, the more we can do in future.

Here are our top tips to help you raise the most - and raise awareness of encephalitis and The Society too, which is desperately needed!

1. Tell us about your fundraising

If you are fundraising for us, let us know, so that we can provide you with everything you need to make your event a success. You can get in touch with us at fundraising@encephalitis or you can call us on +44 (0)1653 602062

2. Set up an online page - including text giving

Online pages are free and easy to use. We recommend JustGiving which allows you to add Text Giving to your page, or alternatively you can use Virgin Giving.

3. Get social

Social media is a great way to promote your fundraising to family, friends and even strangers! Use pictures and videos to document training or to promote your event so that others can join you on your fundraising journey. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Linkedin are all fantastic platforms for helping you to promote your fundraising.

4. Promote locally

Let local organisations know about your event - they may want to help you gain sponsorship or might be able to help in other ways, such as by providing volunteers or products for raffles/auctions.

5. Press coverage is great promotion!

Never underestimate the power of local media. If you’d like to get your event or story published in your local press, let us know! We have a Communications department who will be more than happy to help.

6. Share your story

Your connection to the cause will show people how important the event is to you. If you feel comfortable, tell them why you are supporting us and help us raise even more awareness of encephalitis.

7. Don't be afraid to ask

If you don't ask - you don't get! If you need any help with formulating your ask, just let us know and we'll be happy to help.

8. Seek other sources of support and funding

Does your employer offer matched funding? Would a local company support you with raffle prizes? There are more ways to raise money than you think!

9. Gift Aid counts

For every £1 donated, we can claim an extra 25p of tax at no further cost to you, so long as the donor pays an amount of income and/or Capital Gains tax.

10. Be safe, be legal

If ever you’re unsure about something, please just get in touch with us.
