Stories and News In the news Family Weekend 2017 The Encephalitis Society is once again hosting our Family Weekend, a special weekend away for families affected by encephalitis. Importantly child places are absolutely FREE! To be able to join us you can be either a family with a child or young person affected by encephalitis or a family with a family member affected by encephalitis. We will be hosting the weekend at the Bendrigg Trust in Cumbria. There are activities for everyone and all abilities such as Rock Climbing, Zip Wire, Canoeing, Caving and a fantastic sensory room! Instructors are highly qualified and have vast experience of working with youth groups and disabilities. Activities are run in such a way that encourages teamwork and will require young people to support and encourage each other, building confidence and friendships. The best thing was the children’s confidence, achieving activities they would never have thought possible. Alternative indoor activities for children can be provided including indoor caving and rock climbing and we will have workshops for adults during the morning and adult outdoor activity groups in the afternoons. Staff and volunteers from The Society will be on hand and we can provide specialist childcare to help provide the chance for respite. My family has been able to share others experience of living through and with Encephalitis, it gives us a new understanding and appreciation of life. Child places are absolutely FREE, however there is a cost for parents attending the weekend. The cost (£125/adult) covers 3 nights’ accommodation, all meals from supper on Friday night to breakfast on Monday morning and all activities. We can help source funding for families on low incomes.
