To Olivia - Podcast

In the latest edition of the Encephalitis Podcast, Dr Ava Easton is joined by director John Hay and producer Donall McCusker whose latest production is the new Sky Original film, To Olivia.

Synopsis: It’s 1962 and burgeoning children's author Roald Dahl and Patricia Neal, a glamourous Hollywood movie star, have retreated to the English countryside to bring up their expanding young family. Tragically, their lives are turned upside down by the devastating death of their daughter Olivia from measles encephalitis and as the couple struggle through the unimaginable loss, their shared grief becomes a source of redemption and strength which changes their lives forever.

John Hay is a two-time Emmy Award-winning film and TV director whose work includes classic book adaptations such as Stig of the Dump, The Truth About Love, There's Only One Jimmy Grimble and Lost Christmas.

Donall McCusker is a Line producer and producer whose credits include The Hurt Locker (2008), Under the Shadow (2016) and Six Days (2017).

Guidelines for recovery

Limbic encephalitis

The term ‘limbic encephalitis’ (LE) describes the condition when limbic areas of the brain are inflamed (swollen) and consequently not functioning properly. Most forms of LE fall into two main categories: infectious encephalitis and autoimmune encephalitis.

Encephalitis is a serious neurological condition and unfortunately, despite improvements in specific and more supportive treatments such as excellent intensive care management, encephalitis still has a high mortality (death) rate.

West Nile encephalitis

Emotional and behavioural changes

Following encephalitis, some people may experience emotional and behavioural changes including low mood, increased anxiety, depression, mood swings, frustration, aggression, impulsivity, disinhibition, and/or poor emotional regulation.
