Reporting to the Director of Services, you will be an enthusiastic and proactive individual, working within a small award-winning team to provide crucial support to the Encephalitis Society's volunteers. Your responsibilities will include recruiting, training and managing volunteers, ensuring that all volunteers receive the right level of support. You will also be required to ensure all policies and procedures are up-to-date. If you have excellent communication skills, the ability to engage with various audiences, the capacity to inspire and motivate others and want to make a difference to people affected by encephalitis, we would love to hear from you.

Job profile

Job purpose: To promote volunteer opportunities with the Society, and to ensure volunteers are trained, supported, motivated and able to fully contribute towards the Encephalitis Society’s vision and mission.


  • Recruit volunteers and ensure they are appropriately matched and trained for a position.
  • Monitor, support, motivate and accredit volunteers and their work.
  • Ensure there is appropriate support and training for volunteers.
  • Keep up-to-date/re-issue volunteer policies and procedures, including risk assessments.
  • Keep up to date with legislation and policy related to volunteering and make any necessary modifications to accommodate changes.
  • Raise staff’s awareness of the role and the function of volunteers.
  • Offer advice and information to volunteers and external organisations through face-to-face, telephone and email contact.
  • Organise events for existing and new volunteers.
  • Attend meetings and events organised by volunteers.
  • Manage budgets and resources, including the reimbursement of expenses.
  • Work with multiple organisations/agencies across different sectors in order to enable volunteering.
  • Monitor and evaluate activities and write reports for funders and trustees.
  • Maintain databases and work with colleagues on projects and campaigns which involve volunteers.
  • Work with colleagues to produce a strategy and plan for volunteering which contributes to the Encephalitis Society’s vision and mission

Salary: 20-24k depending on experience pro rata

Working hours: 30 hours

Evening and weekend work may be involved, for which time in lieu will be offered.

Some travelling is also expected.

Essential skills and experience

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal with a diverse range of people.
  • An empathy with volunteers and an understanding of their needs.
  • The capacity to inspire and motivate others.
  • The ability to deal with information in a confidential manner and respond with sensitivity.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage a variety of tasks.
  • Administrative skills and an ability to maintain records and produce clear written and oral reports
  • A high degree of IT literacy including experience of CRM databases (preferably eTapestry) and ability to use Outlook, Word and Excel to an intermediate level.
  • Clean driving licence.

Essential knowledge and qualifications

  • Educated to A level standard or with equivalent experience.

Desirable skills and experience

  • Experience of managing or coordinating projects and volunteers (paid or unpaid).
  • Experience of working and developing links with other agencies.
  • Familiarity with encephalitis.
  • Previous experience of working in a charity.
