L'Etap du Tour

Event Date:20 July 2009
Last donating day: 20 October 2009

Every year, the organisers of the Tour de France open one stage to around 10,000 amateurs. This year it will be the penultimate stage - 170 km from Montelimar to Mont Ventoux, with the last 22km a gruelling climb to the top of the Giant of the Provence, inevitably where this year's Tour will be decided.

I aim to complete the race in 8 hrs - 6 for the 150km to the bottom of Ventoux and 2 to get to the top and would like to use this, my biggest cycling challenge yet, to raise money for the Encephalitis Society

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page

Peter and I are two 17-year-old students at Winchester College. This August we are planning to go out to Tanzania for three weeks, the first two of which we will be working in a women's HIV/AIDs clinic, helping to raise awareness in the community. For the third week of our trip we are going to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. At 5896 metres tall, Kilimanjaro is not only the tallest mountain in Africa, but it's the tallest free-standing mountain in the world!

We are climbing Kilimanjaro in aid of Jonny Sutton, a Wykehmaist who, before unfortunatley passing away last year of Encephalitis, completed the climb himself.

The Encephalitis Society is a charity obviously very close to our hearts. It does a great job helping people, directly and indirectly, affected with encephalitis.

Abigail Dalzell

I am running on 20th September 2009 for the Encephalitis Society in memory of a close friend who was struck down suddenly by this awful disease. The charity promotes both support of sufferers and their families and research into Encephalitis and my participation in the Run is important to me as I feel strongly that I want to do what I can to help with this, both in memory of my wonderful friend and for others.

Learning to play the violin to Grade 1 level & Walkng on the longest day

Event Date:Summer 2009
Last donating day: 1 July 2014

Margaret Hersee

I initially planned to undertake a challenge to learn the violin and pass a Grade 1 (ABRSM) exam. My daughter Rhiannon (who is the one who had encephalitis when she was 5) agreed to teach me. This has, however, proved much harder than I expected, partly due to the nature of her difficulties. But I'm learning my first piece and I'm hoping I can manage this by September.

As I was worried that I might not complete the above task, I decided to take part in a walk and ask for sponsorship for that as well (or instead of) the above - just in case. I have now completed a walk as part of the Peak District Historic Border Country's Walking Festival - A Longish Walk on the Longest Day. This was a walk of 10.5 miles, exploring the beautiful Linacre and Cordwell Valleys.

It has been a couple of years since I last took part in a fundraising event and I've made the decision to do a full marathon for the first time! It's going to be a very challenging event, but one that I will work extremely hard to achieve.

This years charity is going to be The Encephalitis Society. The reason for choosing this may be obvious to some, but unclear to others. I will now try and explain why......

Just over 6 years ago, Christmas Eve 2002, I had finished up at work and was getting prepared for another wonderful festive season, however it turned into a definitive moment in my life.

After getting home, I was wrapping some last-minute gifts and I suddenly started to feel very dizzy. Moments later I had collapsed and was rushed to the A&E at St. Johns Hospital in Livingston for checks. After 3-4 days my condition had gradually improved and the hospital staff advised my parents that I would be able to return home to continue the recovery. Luckily, my mum insisted on speaking to another consultant and asked for further tests to be carried out. The outcome of these resulted in me being transferred to the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. Within days my health had deteriorated and I was diagnosed with an illness called Viral Encephalitis. The next 4 weeks were lost moments as I had been placed in a induced coma to assist the recovery process.

I feel extremely blessed to have survived this event and to be where I am today. My approach to life has changed dramactically since this point. I now live life to the full and I have also attempted to repay the work of surgeons and doctors by taking part in fundraising events for various charities. Previous ones include the Forth Rail Bridge Abseil (April 2005) for The Meningitis Research Foundation, and the Ben Nevis Mountain Challenge (June 2007) for the Marie Curie Cancer

There are so many things that have happened in my life since this event that I have had the pleasure in experiencing. Nothing will EVER compare to the day I became a father to the most amazing little girl (Frankie Mischa) on December 11, 2007! But, a very close second will be getting married to Janie over the festive season of 2009/2010 : )

I would really appreciate if you could help me in reaching my fundraising target and helping others who are going / or have gone through a similar situation

Thanks for help, Mitch x
