Specialist Encephalitis Clinic

Dr Steven White at St Mary’s Hospital, London provides a service for people who have developed difficult to control seizures (epilepsy), especially in the context of other cognitive, memory and neurobehavioural problems.

Adults affected by encephalitis can be referred to this clinic by their GP or other health professionals involved in their care. Currently, referrals need to meet the following criteria:

  1. The person affected is over the age of 18 years and has epilepsy (with or without other difficulties) following encephalitis.
  2. Referral is acceptable to the person’s GP and other doctors and health professionals involved in their care.
  3. The referring health care professional should have evidence that the local Primary Care Trust is prepared to fund referral to the clinic at St Mary’s Hospital.

Facilities currently available through this clinic include:

  • Assessment and advice on the treatment of epilepsy.
  • Investigations including MRI, EEG and videotelemetry.
  • Referral for assessments in:
    • Neuropsychology
    • Memory disorders
    • Neuropsychiatry

We recognize that some people may not meet the three current criteria and so are unable to benefit from this clinic at this time. We hope in the future to be able to develop a clinic that can provide a broader resource for people who have had encephalitis. While practical considerations mean that this is not possible at the moment, we are pleased to have been able to begin the journey towards a comprehensive assessment clinic in the future.

If you meet the above criteria and you and your doctors feel that you would benefit from an assessment at this clinic, then your GP or other referring health professional should make the referral to:

Dr Steven White, Consultant Neurophysiologist, Neurophysiology Department, Level 1, Mary Stanford Wing, St Mary’s Hospital, Praed Street, London W2 1NY (Telephone: 0207 886 1391)

Please note that it is unfortunately not possible to accept self-referrals.

More than 120,000 people leave hospital each year with a brain injury. This represents a huge increase in the last twenty years, partly due to improved medical and hospital services.

. . . With the support of our highly specialised vocational rehabilitation teams at our Brain Injury Centres, we are helping these people."
